Etymology: In reference to the city of Santa Cruz do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil, wihere the new species was discovered, and Greek, odon, "tooth."

Etymology: In honor of Dr. James A. Hopson, in recognition of his vast contribution to our knowledge of nonmammalian therapsids.

Localty: Suburbs of the city of Santa Cruz do Sul, S28°44'25", W52°27'01", Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil.

Biostratigraphy: Santacruzodon Assemblage Zone.

Age: Late Carnian Stage, Lower Late Triassic Epoch, Late Triassic (orignially Late Ladinian Substage Late Landian Stage, Uppermost Mid Triassic Epoch, Middle Triassic, or ?Julian Substage, ?Early Carnian Stage, Lower Late Triassic Epoch, Late Triassic).

Material: Fragmentary skull with lower jaw.
