Etymology: In reference to the Arundel Clay facies of the Potomac Formation and Greek, emys, "a turtle."

Etymology: In honor of Tom Darden, former owner of the Hotton Locality, who allowed field work to be conducted at this locailty over the years.

Holotype: USNM 497740

Locality: USNM locality 41614 (Muirkirk site, Hotton Locality), Laurel Quadrangle, USGS 1:24,000, 1979, old open pit clay mine near Muirkirk now Dinosaur Park, Price Georges County, Maryland.

Horizon: Arundel Formation, Potomic Group.

Biostratigraphy:

Age: Upper Aptian-Lower Albian Stage, Middle Gallic Subepoch, Upper Early Cretaceous Epoch, Early Cretaceous.

Material: Nearly complete skull.
