Etymology: Chubut, for province of Argentina in which it was found and Greek, emys, "turtle."

Etymology: For Maria Copello, who discovered the holotype.

Locality: "Turtle Town", 43°36'S, 68°55'W, Chubut Province, Argentina.

Horizon: Cerro Castano Member, Cerro Barcino Formation, Chubut Group.

Biostratigraphy:

Age: Aptain Stage, Middle Gallic Subepoch, Upper Early Cretaceous Epoch, Early Cretaceous.

Material: A partial skull lacking much of the bone from its dorsal surface, but with an internal mold of it present, ventral surfaces preserved intact with stapes in situ, atlas elements disarticulated, and a piece of presumed hyoid in right temporal fossa.
