Etymology: Arabic, hamada, "a stony plateau" and Greek, chelys, "turtle": Hamada turtle.

Etymology: In honor of Francois Escuillie.

Holotype: Musee des Dinosaures (Esperaza, Aude, France), n° T-03

Locality: “Hamada du Guir” near Taouz, Kem-Kem, east and south of Tafilalt, southern Morocco.

Horizon: Red beds.

Biostratigraphy:

Age: Probably Cenomanian Stage, upper Gallic subepoch, Lower Gulf Epoch, Middle Cretaceous.

Material: An almost complete skull of a young individual with the lower jaw in connection, two hyoid bones, all preserved together.
