Genus: Karkaemys ZALMOUT, MUSTAFA & WILSON, 2005
Etymology: Karka refers to the Aramaic name for the ancient capital of Moab (which is now known as Karak), where the holotype was discovered. The aramaic root Krk, means "to enclose" or "to circumference", which refers literally to the walled city of Karak and can be applied figuratively to the turtle's enclosure within its shell; and Greek, emys, "turtle."

Locality: "Huseiniyah", 31°00'22"N, 35°43'52"E, Wadi Falqa, near El-Huseiniyah and El-Hashimiyah villages, Central Jordan.

Horizon: Top of the Wadi Umm Ghudran Formation.

Biostratigraphy:

Age: Upper Santonian Stage, Lower Senonian Subepoch, Lower Gulf Epoch, Early Late Cretaceous.

Material: A nearly complete skull lacking lower jaws, plastron, caudal vertebrae, partial pelvis, partial femur, tibia and fibula..
