Note: Elongatoolithids are known to belong to theropod dinosaurs based on new material collected in Mongolia and China. The well-preserved remnants of an oviraptorid embryo have been found within an Elongatoolithus egg (Norell et al, 1994). Oviraptorosaur embryos have also been found in Macroelongatoolithus eggs from Henan Province, China (Zelenitsky, pers. comm.). Additionally, adult specimens of Oviraptor have been found atop of nests of Elongatoolithus eggs (Dong and Currie, 1996; Norell et al., 1995). Elongatoolithid eggshells are also known from Lower Cretaceous strata of North America (Zelenitsky pers. comm.); These rocks also contain the remains of probable Oviraptorosaurs (Makovicky and Sues, 1998).

EGGS WITH DINOSAUROID-PRISMATIC BASIC SHELL TYPE
oofamily: PRISMATOOLITHIDAE Hirsch, 1994
Note: Prismatoolithid eggs from the Upper Cretaceous of Montana were initially attributed to hypsilophodontid dinosaurs, based on embryonic remains within eggs (Horner and Weishampel, 1888; Hirsch and Quinn, 1990). Subsequently, numerous prismatoolithid egg fossils from the Santonian-Campanian of Mongolia (oogenus Protoceratopsidovum) were attributed to protoceratopsian dinosaurs, based on the common occurrence of protoceratopsids in these strata (Mikhailov, 1994a; Mikhailov et al, 1994). It has been announced recently that assignment of the embryonic remains from the prismatoolithid eggs from Montana to the hypsilophodontid Orodromeus makelai was erroneous. The embryo has since been reassigned to the theropod Troodon cf. formosus (Horner and Weishampel 1996), Prismatoolithid eggs share several characteristics with other theropod eggs (e.g., elongatoolithids) and their initial assignment to hypsilophodonts and protoceratopsids is probably incorrect (Zelenitsky, pers. comm.).

TUBOSPHERULITIC STRUCTURAL MORPHOTYPE
oofamily: "MEGALOOLITHIDAE" Zhao, 1979
[Sauropoda]
Note: The first dinosaur eggs remains were discovered in Cretaceous strata of Southern France over a century ago (Pouech..). These eggs, known as megaloolithids, have been assumed to belong to sauropod dinosaurs because they are usually found in strata that are rich in sauropod remains (Erben et al., 1979; Vianey-Liaud et al. 1987; Jain 1989; Sahni et al, 1994). Recent confirmation of this correlation was made with the discovery of South American megaloolithid eggs containing sauropod embryos (Chiappe et al, 1998). Occasional references to typical megaloolithid eggshells as “hadrosaurian’ (Grigorescu et al, 1994, p. 77) are obviously misleading. Additionally, Upper Cretaceous strata in North America are rich hadrosaur remains and contain no trace of megaloolithid eggshell (Zelenitsky, pers. comm.). All positively identified hadrosaurian eggs have a different eggshell structure (see Spheroolithidae).

[Ornithopoda: some hadrosaurs]
Note: As per Mikhailov, 1997…Spheroolithus eggs from Laiyang have been attributed to hadrosaurs (Young, 1959, pp. 511, 517); the eggs of S. irenensis were found in close association with Bactrosaurus remains (Zhao and Jiang, 1974, p. 81). Spheroolithid eggs from the Upper Cretaceous Two Medicine Formation of Montana were found in association with hadrosaurian juveniles (Horner and Makela, 1979). Lambeosaurine embryos (Hypacrosaurus stebingeri; Horner and Currie, 1994) were also found in association with large spherical eggs; however, the eggshell morphotype could not be identified as spheroolithid because it is diagenetically modified (Zelenitsky, 1995). This was misinterpreted by Mikhailov. These discoveries have allowed all spheroolithid remains to be attributed to hadrosaurs (Hirsch and Quinn, 1990, Mikhailov et al, 1994). Their abundance, as well as their geographical and stratigraphical distribution, are in accordance with this conclusion…

Note: As per Mikhailov, 1997…The histrostructure of the shell and other, superficial features of the egg, are similar to those of the Spheroolithidae. At the Mogoyn-Ulagiyn-Kheates locality (= Tel-Ulan-Ula; Mongolia, Dornogov Aimak), pinkish strata containing numerous ovaloolithid eggs in clutches yield remnants of only lambeosaurine dinosaurs (S. M. Kurzanov, pers. comm.). This prompts the tentative assignment of ovaloolithid remains to ornithopod dinosaurs. Preliminary assignment of embryonic limb bones associated with an ovaloolithid egg (PIN 2970/9) to protoceratopsian dinosaurs (L. I. Hozatcky in Sochen, 1972) has proved to be incorrect (S. M. Kurzanov, see Mikhailov et al., 1994)…

Although Elzanowski never stated that these embryos should be assigned to the small bird Gobipteryx minuta, described earlier from deposits of the same age (Elzanowski, 1977), this opinion has occasionally appeared in the literature Recent re-examination of embryonic material (Kurockhin, 1995) has shown that the embryo, which shares some features with Gobipteyx, is not certainly associated with the Gobioolithus minor eggs. Embryos that are certainly from Gobioolithus minor eggs may belong to a different group of birds, apparently Palaeognathae…
